Local dialling appear on its way out as a result of a lack of phone numbers
Ofcom has announced that certain areas of Britain will no longer be able to make local calls without using the area code as phone numbers in many areas are running out of numbers.
Bournemouth will start to see the system roll out in the coming year, with other areas which are short of numbers including Aberdeen, Bradford, Brighton, Cambridge and Milton Keynes looking set to join the scheme by 2016.
A number of other areas have been outlined as potentially in need of the usage of area codes in the next decade, but locations for instance London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh aren’t affected because they have shorter area codes.
Ofcom also said that more phone number providers have been putting strain on the supply of numbers and some of them have been hanging onto numbers and it turns out it is things like this which have led to the shortage. To discourage this, Ofcom will now be charging providers 10p for each number to make sure they use numbers more efficiently, a cost which won’t be transferred onto the public.
It is considered that this method will be less troublesome for both domestic and business customers, along with users of telephone systems for small business. Although internal phone systems in some businesses might require some changes.
